Dull Blue Violet · Violet Red

Two violets from the same garden bed, one caught in light, the other in shadow under the leaves.

The hues are close kin, both in the violet range, so there is no argument between them, only a change of degree. One is lighter and bluer, the other darker and nearer red. Such narrow steps can grow dull, and what saves this pair is the firm drop in value from the first colour to the second.
